Eureka Entertainment is pleased to announce that its Masters of Cinema series has been chosen as the ‘Label of the Year’ in the latest February 2010 edition of HOME CINEMA CHOICE Magazine beating the other nominees – Walt Disney’s Platinum/Diamond Editions and Optimum’s Studio Canal Collection.
“From contemporary Asian cinema to silent 1920s classics, Eureka’s Masters of Cinema Series is a cinephile’s dream come true” – Home Cinema Choice
Founded in 2004, The Masters of Cinema Series is a carefully curated UK-based DVD and Blu-ray label consisting of over 100 films – from full-blown masterworks such as Sunrise, Ugetsu Monogatari, Metropolis, and La Notte – to rarer films equally deserving of visibility among a wider audience. The most sublime works of the greatest filmmakers mingle with lesser-known productions that nevertheless represent cinema at its best.
Films in the Masters of Cinema range are presented in their original aspect ratio (OAR), in meticulous transfers created from recent restorations and/or the most pristine film elements available to us. The feature presentations are frequently supplemented by short films, documentaries, commentary tracks, deleted scenes, trailers, and new and vintage interview footage. Mad Detective was the first Blu-ray in the Series which was released in November 2008 with many more planned.
Each release is also accompanied by a substantial booklet or a full-sized book. Alongside rare photography, they include newly commissioned essays and classic writings that take the reader further into the process of the films and the personalities of the filmmakers. Contributors include filmmakers: Guillermo del Toro, Bruno Dumont, Jean-Pierre Gorin, Claude Lanzmann, Luc Moullet, Martin Scorsese, Peter Watkins and numerous film scholars
“We lavish a great amount of time and energy on every release, born from our enthusiasm for, our love of, and our allegiance to the cinema. We’re very lucky that many of our supporters confidently ‘blind buy’ our new releases safe in the knowledge that we care about the films’ presentation as much as they do” – Nick Wrigley, Masters of Cinema Production Director
Forthcoming releases for 2010 include The Lubitsch in Berlin Box Set, Une Femme Mariee (Blu-ray), the unforgettable mixture of bubblegum teen melodrama and grisly phantasmagoria that is House [Hausu], Douglas Sirk’s There’s Always Tomorrow, Fritz Lang’s M on DVD and Bluray and the bold move of releasing Murnau’s City Girl - the first classic film to be released exclusively on Blu-ray in the UK.
The Masters of Cinema release of Murnau’s Sunrise was also chosen as ‘Best Remastering’ for it’s Blu-ray version released in September 2009.
The latest edition of Home Cinema Choice Magazine is in the shops now.
