Overall, only 81 film scores qualified, giving the category by far the smallest field among the 15 categories for which ballots went out last week. By comparison, 274 films qualified for best picture, best film editing, best cinematography and the two sound categories.

7 Features Continue in VFX Oscar® Race

Beverly Hills, CA (January 6, 2010) — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that seven films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 82nd Academy Awards®.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

* “Avatar”
* “District 9”
* “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”
* “Star Trek”
* “Terminator Salvation”
* “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”
* “2012”

On Thursday, January 21, all members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

9 Foreign Language Films Advance in Oscar® Race

Beverly Hills, CA (January 20, 2010) — Nine films will advance to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 82nd Academy Awards®. Sixty-five films had originally qualified in the category.

The films, listed in alphabetical order by country, are:

* Argentina, “El Secreto de Sus Ojos,” Juan Jose Campanella, director;
* Australia, “Samson & Delilah,” Warwick Thornton, director;
* Bulgaria, “The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks around the Corner,” Stephan Komandarev, director;
* France, “Un Prophète,” Jacques Audiard, director;
* Germany, “The White Ribbon,” Michael Haneke, director;
* Israel, “Ajami,” Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani, directors;
* Kazakhstan, “Kelin,” Ermek Tursunov, director;
* The Netherlands, “Winter in Wartime,” Martin Koolhoven, director;
* Peru, “The Milk of Sorrow,” Claudia Llosa, director.

Foreign Language Film nominations for 2009 are again being determined in two phases.

The Phase I committee, consisting of several hundred Los Angeles-based members, screened the 65 eligible films between mid-October and January 16. The group’s top six choices, augmented by three additional selections voted by the Academy’s Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, constitute the shortlist.

The shortlist will be winnowed down to the five nominees by specially invited committees in New York and Los Angeles. They will spend Friday, January 29, through Sunday, January 31, viewing three films each day and then casting their ballots.

The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Kuskilt oli kõrva jäänud, et SAGi järgi saab edukalt Oscareid ennustada, aga päris nii see siiski pole.

Teistele halba küll ei sobi soovida, kuid ma sooviksin, et James Cameron ei võidaks ühtegi kuldmehikest. Õudsalt tahaks, et "Inglourious Basterds" saaks parima filmi ja Tarantino lavastaja auhinna, aga see vaevalt juhtub. Parima filmi oscari võidab tõenäoliselt, kas "Up in the Air" või "The Hurt Locker" (pigem viimane). "Avatar" on küll 3. favoriit, kuid ma ei pea selle linateose šanssi niivõrd heaks. Kindlasti võidab Cameroni ulmeeepos mõne tehnilise auhinna.

Cameron napsab kindlasti mõne tehnilise kuldmehikese, aga minu salasooviks on District 9-ni Best Picture, mis on arvatavasti väga ebatõenäoline.
D9 või IB võit oleks minu unistus.
Up in the Air oli väga hea, aga ei ole päris kindel, et kas ka aasta parima filmi vääriline.
An Education ja Avatar kindlasti mitte, Precious ja The Blind Side on veel ootejärjekorras. Huvitav, mis selles Bullocki rollis siis nii erilist on?
The Hurt Locker on minu jaoks parajalt vastuoluline. Pean uuesti vaatama, et selgust saada. Hetkel tundub THL fenomenaalne edu väga kummaline. Ma ei ütlegi, et tegu ei ole hea filmiga, aga eks suvine esmatutvustus annab oma pika vahega nüüd tunda.
