Viimased "1001" raamatusse lisatud filmid panevad küll pead kratsima.

For me, greatest films always have to speak to me or challenge me not only on an intellectual, conscious level, but also by somehow accessing my subconsciousness as well. This ability to access one’s subconscious mind is a prerequisite of change – changing the viewer’s point of view, his/her state of mind, disproving one’s prejudice, opening his/her eyes etc. The greatest films all do that: they have the power to change things, and as a film theorist and critic one can spend hundreds of challenging, yet rewarding hours trying to discover how exactly this change was conducted and executed. As you probably already noticed, there is one Estonian film on the list as well (surely, at the time it was made, Ukuaru was considered part of the Soviet film tradition). It shouldn’t come as a surprise for Sight & Sound readers, but I am pretty sure it does. Leida Laius studied in Moscow with Otar Iosseliani, Larisa Shepitko and lots of other significant Soviet filmmakers, and was taught by Gerassimov, Romm, Kuleshov, Dovzhenko and so on. Excellent melodrama, wonderful acting and smart editing go hand in hand with Arvo Pärt’s original score, which includes the famous ‘Ukuaru Waltz’, to make Ukuaru one the greatest Estonian films of all time.

Citizen Kane 1941 Orson Welles

This is my very personal top ten – films that have had the biggest impact on my understanding of cinema.

Tiina Lokk
Amarcord 1972 Federico Fellini
Andrei Rublev 1966 Andrei Tarkovsky
Battleship Potemkin 1925 Sergei M Eisenstein
Citizen Kane 1941 Orson Welles
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring… 2003 Kim Ki-Duk
One and a Two, A 1999 Edward Yang
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 1975 Milos Forman
Pulp Fiction 1994 Quentin Tarantino
Taste of Cherry, The 1997 Abbas Kiarostami
Zero de Conduite 1933 Jean Vigo

Citizen Kane has a revolutionary good script and camera work – I am not speaking of its direction. Definitely the strongest debut of all the time. There isn’t nothing bigger and better than Battleship Potemkin when it comes to editing. The whole basic theory of editing is contained within this film. Potemkin is the beginning of the beginners. Andrei Rublev is a strongest story about the artist – the suffering of the creator and creation. Tarkovski made the individual story of Rubljov much bigger then it was in reality until finally it is like a symbol, an archetype of the artist and his relationships with power and absolutist authority. I also like the visual language of the film. The scene with bells is one of the greatest in history of the cinema. Zero de Conduite displays an amazing sensuousness of image. Amarcord is a hearty, dreamlike insight in flashback. Pulp Fiction is built from fantastic combinations of Godar and Hawks, and symbols of satirical violence. In The Taste of Cherry, Kirostami proves himself to be the master of the philosophy of the simple life, and I am bonded to his masterly humanism and bewitched by his visual world. Yi Yi is a sensitive movie, very beautifully shot, well acted, human and emotional, and with balanced humour. But sadness is absorbing... It’s useless to try to say something with two words about Four Seasons… but if so, it must be about it’s concentration of philosophy and poetry. Finally, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which had a big personal impact on me when it came out. The film has a strong message to everyone who, after the events in Prague in 1968, should have to stayed on the other side of Iron Curtain. Well directed and well acted. Jack Nicholson is great!

Veiko Õunpuu
Autumn Afternoon, An 1962 Ozu Yasujirô
Bohemian Life, The 1992 Aki Kaurismaki
Diary of a Country Priest 1951 Robert Bresson
Even the Dwarves Started Small 1970 Werner Herzog
Faces 1968 John Cassavetes
Fear Eats the Soul 1974 Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Medea 1970 Pier Paolo Pasolini
olvidados, Los 1995 Luis Buñuel
Solaris 1972 Andrei Tarkovsky
Stranger than Paradise 1982 Jim Jarmusch

It is very hard to choose just ten films out of every one ever made, so I am going to choose those that have made the biggest impact on me. Although there are more truly exceptional films, some that might be better made or more important to film history, these were the ones that left me completely speechless and wondering. I look up with great respect to all of the directors here.

Uuendus 2: Meeldiva üllatusena on üks Briti tädi Priit Pärna "Eine murul" poolt hääletanud. :irw:
